5 Reasons Why You Should Join Contests

by Rico on July 1st, 2007

Are you a freelance SEO expert? Maybe you should check out Marc’s recently-launched SEO contest.

Have you considered participating in contests? Well-run and high-profile open competitions have at least five characteristics that are helpful to your freelance career:

  1. Confidence booster. Just joining a contest already boosts your confidence, because you’ve made the crucial step of making your work available to public critique.
  2. Practice opportunity. Since practice makes perfect, a contest provides you with a deadline and a set of criteria to meet. Working within these limitations means more practice for your skills.
  3. Free feedback. Some judges, if you ask them directly, are very willing to explain their choices. You can actually find out the reasons behind your performance in case you didn’t make the cut.
  4. Profile advertising. Even if you don’t win, but place in the top 5, 10, etc., or even win a special award, you can actually use your ranking to showcase your proficiency. And award-winning freelancers are really attractive for potential clients.
  5. Income potential. By far the most popular reason why people join a contest. It’s a chance to win some good money.

So don’t hesitate to join contests. Winning one could turn out to be your big break and lead to many more inquiries about your services. And even if you don’t get very far, at least you’ll learn what it takes to do so, and apply it to your career as a contract worker.
