A 6th Common Mistake That Makes You Look Dumb
If you’re a freelancer writer or speaker, then you must read Brian Clark’s post on 5 Common Mistakes That Make You Look Dumb. I still get “affect” and “effect” mixed up.
A vs. An
Many people confuse the two, or always A. Especially in this frontier known as “teh internets,” where proper grammar is extremely optional. But it’s easy to avoid the mistake, especially if you keep two simple rules in mind. When the next word begins with a vowel sound, you use An. And A precedes words beginning with a consonant sound.
Examples like “a banana” and “an element” are easy to follow. But “a union” and “an honorable man” may confuse some. Once you realize that “union” is pronounced “yew-nyon” and “honorable” is said “o-no-ra-ball”, the pattern becomes clear.
Let’s go back to my first sentence. “A freelancer” is proper, but “a F” (as in the letter) isn’t.
