Advice For Freelancers From Lynyrd Skynyrd and Deftones

Whether it’s the Lynyrd Skynyrd original, or the haunting Deftones cover, the melody of Simple Man is uplifting, matching the inspiring advice the song has for people—and freelancers in particular. Copyright restrictions prevent me from posting all the lyrics, so I’ll concentrate on certain snippets:

Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.

Believe or not, much has been accomplished before you came along. You have nothing to lose by listening to what the “veterans”, “elders”, and the “greats” have to say. At the very least, their information will help you avoid common mistakes, productively maximize your time, and maintain professionalism. Even their work can provide the clues that lead to freelancing success.

And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.

You no doubt know that a complicated workflow limits your productivity. In other words, cut the distractions and the non-essentials from your work day. Instead of spending time trying to decide what you need to do, go with the tasks that hold a greater priority. It literally is that simple. But before you even get down to work as a freelancer, make sure that you’re really doing what you want. Is your work something that you truly love and understand?

Boy, dont you worry. You’ll find yourself.
Follow you heart and nothing else.
And you can do this if you try.

Only perseverance gets us through mistakes, setbacks, and other unfortunate events. And the way to possess such a virtue is to be involved in work that’s really in line with your passions. Don’t worry if things aren’t going your way, because as long as you’re doing the work you want, you’ll eventually find a way to recover. Most of life’s obstacles are like puzzles, and truly passionate solvers are the ones who come up creative solutions.

With such great lyrics, it’s no wonder that Simple Man is “based on advice the women in their lives had [the song’s writers] over the years.” I guess some fundamentals never change no matter how many years pass. What timeless advice can you share, fellow freelancers?
