An Easy Way to Stay Updated Online

by Rico on July 3rd, 2007

If you freelance in the online world, it helps to stay updated with what’s happening. Opportunities come and go, and the sooner you find out about them the easier it is to take full advantage of them.

So, it literally pays to make up a list of websites you consider important, and subscribe to their RSS feeds. In case you’ve been under a rock for the last few years, RSS is a syndication format designed to facilitate the publication of new content. With a feed reader, or a program designed to cull RSS feeds into an easy to read format, you’ll automatically receive anything new as they become available. This is particularly useful for your favorite blogs, and job sites.

It’s safe to say that thousands, if not millions of people stay updated through RSS, instead of frequently visiting the sites themselves. It’s just more convenient that way. If you find a website that doesn’t feature RSS, just remember that any site that offers new content on a regular basis should feature RSS-capability. Those who don’t aren’t just worth their salt.

By the way, you can check out A Feed is Born, a b5media technology channel blog, for latest developments in RSS.

Oh yes. I could not perform without feeds.

Lately, I have been experimenting with Yahoo Pipes. I need to stay updated on say ‘digital paintings’. The issue is, I have multiple feeds to look out for, like Google Blog Search, and Technorati. Instead of multiple feeds in my feed reader, I fed it to Yahoo Pipes, and then filtered out all items containing spammy words, and sorted based on time. It is not working as I want it to, but it is workable. (Need to explore Yahoo pipes a bit more).

And then, I just get that feed into my feed reader. Saves a lot of hassle. :)

Thanks for the great heads-up Vyoma! Yahoo Pipes definitely sounds better than the email subscription of Google Search Alerts. I’m sure it’ll help keep the inbox clean!
