Are Our Hands Really That Important?

Writing about personal health made me remember an acquaintance back in high school who being classically trained on the piano, This meant he had to take care of his fingers, which meant he had to avoid sports, physical labor, and any other activities where there was even the tiniest chance of injuring the hands.

This extremely limiting regime (he couldn’t even do basic exercises) makes sense when you realize that my acquaintance was an aspiring artist. He needed to keep his hands and finger in tip-top shape if he ever hoped to maximize his natural talent and learning. This is somewhat similar to hand models who keep their appendages within gloves and within their pockets while walking, to protect the source of their livelihood.

I find myself asking: should freelancers, most of whom make a living through their hands and fingers, take more drastic steps to protect what lets them get things done? Or is the ability to think, reason out, and find solutions the only important thing? Should we pay attention to the risk, no matter how minimal, of losing the use of one or even both of our hands? In other words, is our mind the only thing we have to protect?

Let me know what you think.

Oooo Rico! You put me in a bit of ‘paranoid mode’. I do art, and I do most of the things with my hands/fingers.

And I remember when I was taking classical guitar classes, I had to keep my nails in shape, and flexible.

Yeah, so did I! Had a hell of a time keeping my nails clean though. :)
