Avoiding Productivity-Limiting Injuries

(source)
I’m currently having a hard time writing this post. That’s what a sprained wrist on your strong arm does to you. At least I can still move my fingers, operate my mouse, and type on a keyboard. Albeit at a much slower pace.
This reminds me of a former acquaintance who was training to be a conservative pianist. He was totally devoted to his craft, and made sure not to participate in any activity that carried even a remote chance of hand injury. He was protecting his future livelihood, which was selected by his passion, at any cost.
I’m not saying we should be as fanatical as my friend. But, if we’re to remain productive as freelancers and contract workers, then we should take care of our bodies. This doesn’t end at simply avoiding stupid and needless activities. It also extends to more holistic measures such as quitting smoking. Health is wealth after all, and a sick freelancer will have a harder time getting anything done.
