Contract Worker - Freelancing Experiences

Avoiding the Temptations of Home: Being Your Own Boss

by Rico on March 4th, 2007

Now that you’ve gone through your morning routine, sat down in your great home office, and made sure that everything’s at hand, it’s time to rise above the temptations of home by being your own boss.

Yes, as a contract worker of freelancer, you decide when to work. But with great freedom comes great responsibility. You have to be your own manager, HR director, accountant, and marketer. No one will be breathing over your shoulder, but if you’re not careful, you may end up spending the whole day goofing off.

As your own Manager, you have to schedule your work days, set the agenda for the day, and decide what needs to be done.

As your own HR Director, it’s up to you to make sure you follow the schedule, and to do what you’ve decided to do.

As your own Accountant, you’ll have to keep track of every penny, making sure that you’re not living beyond your means, and that your hard work is bringing in the income.

As your own Marketer, you’re responsbile for increasing your visibility and leaving a good impression with potential clients.

Surely there are more ways to be your own boss (feel free to suggest any). The point is, the temptations of home are no match for a great self-manager. That’s because he not only knows what needs to be done…he’s willing to get it done.

Rico - Have you ever read a book called E-Myth? I recommend the audio version. Excellent material that takes the things you identified here and goes in to depth with them in a terrific way. Check it out when you can.

Yes! A friend (I forgot who) told me about it. And if I remember correctly, the point of the book is that passion alone isn’t enough for a successful business. You still need basic management skills.

The author, Michael Gerber (I think), breaks down the functions of business into 3 core distinctions - the technical worker, the manager, and the entrepreneur. He explains how most people that go in to business for themselves do so because they love their technical trade but then find themselves engrossed in the managerial and entrepreneurial responsibilities of running your own business. He does a good job putting all this into perspective. I highly recommend the book for anyone planning to or already running their own business.
