Books for Freelancers: The Graphic Designer’s Guide to Clients

It’s been out for over three years now, but The Graphic Designer’s Guide to Clients: How to Make Clients Happy and Do Great Work by Ellen Shapiro still contains timely advice. The first 50 pages contain some reasonable and down-to-earth declarations on the proper treatment of clients, particularly how to attract and retain their interest, as well as negotiating for creative freedom.
But it’s the interviews with various freelancers and their clients that sets this book apart from the other freelancing how-to books I’ve read. Shapiro’s questions may honestly seem intellectually self-serving, but there are still a lot of insights provided by the candid dialogue.
This book may have seen better days; I found my copy in my local bookstore’s bargain bin. Yet the lower price also means superb value.
