Can Freelancers be Typecast?

by Rico on July 20th, 2008

Is it possible for freelancers to make the same mistakes as actors, and be doomed to a certain set of roles? That’s a question explored in part 5 of the seven deadly sins of freelancing, where Bob cites situations where freelancers had to dig themselves out of typecast holes.

It’s well worth the read actually, because is right on point when he stresses the need for freelancers to deliberately brand themselves. It literally echoes a conversation I recently had with an SEO freelancer. I asked him how he always managed to get secure projects that were perfect for his skillset. He immediately answered that it had to a lot with how he picked his projects.

By being more discerning, he only accepted commitments that would boost his profile as he wanted it to be known. Just like an actor no doubt. Obviously, being picky about projects is selfish at best, and threatening to a freelancer’s bottom line at worst. But, as my fellow freelancer said, taking care of your own brand is always a good move in a competitive environment.

In retrospect, my decision to focus more on writing might have made it easier for me to brand myself. It helped me concentrate more on writing, which I believe I’m better at. Deliberate branding after all, requires some genuine thinking. That usually leads to better long-term plans that suit your strengths and desires. So how do you deliberately brand yourself, fellow freelancers?
