Casey Serin Refuses to Learn the Lesson at His Own Risk
I’ve recently come across Casey Serin’s blog, I am Facing Foreclosure, and I agree with the general consensus: he’s a train wreck waiting to happen. Despite making poor and unethical decisions that left him fiscally ruined, Mr. Serin doesn’t seem to understand the true lessons of his experience.
But more importantly, fellow freelancers, Casey’s example highlights what happens if you disregard the balance between trailblazing and conventional wisdom. A balance that every freelancer should strive to maintain. For while contract workers must come up with genuinely unique ideas and things for any chance at success, they must also realize that it’s called “conventional wisdom” for a reason.
In Casey’s case, you get the feeling that he’s trying to find his own way (trailblazing) out of his financial mess, usually ignoring the advice that conventional wisdom can offer him. Advice that could help him get back into positive cashflow and stability. To his credit, Mr. Serin brings something new to the blogosphere, and has managed to build I am Facing Foreclosure into a markedly profitable blog. But there’s such a thing as placing too much importance on your own positions. Especially when your own beliefs got you in trouble in the first place.
Tomorrow, I’ll talk about why the balance between trailblazing and conventional wisdom is important, and why it’s important to your freelancing career. For now, feel free to read through the archives of I am Facing Foreclosure, and see how Casey turns a laudable goal (helping others avoid the mistakes he’s made) into something totally different.
