Contract Worker’s 5 Ways to De-Stress Yourself

by Rico on March 30th, 2008

Of course, the only way to lead a stress-free life is to not do any work, shun any responsibility, and spend the whole day bumming around. Would you want that kind of life? (even if you do, everyone has to make a living one way or another).

In any case, inspired by Quite Oxymoronic, here are my five easy and quick ways to de-stress yourself:

Never Procrastinate. Or in other words, taking the long-term view. Why not get things done right now so that you can relax later, instead of rushing to meet deadlines? The latter option means lower-quality work, as well as avoidable stress.

Get Enough Sleep. Sure, you can stay out late to have fun or to finish a project, but such instances should be the exception, not the rule. Giving your body enough sleep allows it to repair itself, process the food you eat, and most importantly, minimizes stress. Working with more energy means not having to push yourself as much.

Look at Blue. OO suggests green, citing scientific studies to back its assertion up. Yet everyone knows that blue, particularly in darker shades, can also have a calming effect.

Dance! If OO suggests listening to your favorite music (and singing along to it), then I don’t see why you can’t dance to it. Physical movement can be very liberating! Just make sure you keep it private if you’re a bit shy about dancing, like me.

Never Lie. Lying might get what you want at first, but it will also bring some stress when you eventually have to come clean. Have you ever felt the stress of having to tell a client that you were lying about being able to accomplish a project?
