Copyrighting Pictures the Right Way

by Rico on February 23rd, 2008

I really hate watermarks and most credit lines plastered on an image, because they ruin the visual experience of a viewer.

The right way to copyright your pictures and visual work is to go minimal. Let’s take one of my images, a picture of the PSP working with an HDTV:

Let’s get Kottke’s silkscreen font, which is small but readable:

And use a photo-editing program like GIMP or Photoshop to place the copyright line (make sure to turn off font-smoothing for the desired effect):

There we go. The credit line is still there, but it doesn’t grab attention away from your work.

This works, but all one has to do to unwatermark the image is to shave off an 8px strip of the left edge. Still, it’s better than traditional watermarks. I hate those things.

I hate them too, so much so that I’m willing to risk the shave off. If your pic is pretty popular anyway, people will probably know who it belongs to.
