Create Your Websites Offline
Even if they’ll eventually go online, the best way to build and test websites is offline. That way, even if you’re internet connection suddenly gives out, you can continue working. You’re also not using up bandwidth (which you or your client might be paying for). And of course, no one will see the mistakes you make!
Building and testing simple websites offline is relatively straightforward, especially after you read Robert Darrell’s article on relative addressing. But what about projects based on a database, like blogs or online inventory systems? How do you simulate their operation offline?
You’ll need XAMPP, a free program that pretends to be a web server (of the Apache kind, for you technical-minded people). After you install XAMPP and set the necessary options, you can upload your project files and access them as if they were on the net. At much faster speeds of course, since you’re actually loading data from your hard disk. This guide to creating a testbed for Wordpress is useful if you’d like to test that theme or plug-in, or if you want to maintain a really private blog.
