Creativity Exercise: Mimic The Onion

Don’t know The Onion? “America’s Finest News Source” has made me laugh many times with its deadpan delivery of humorous—but untrue—news. The writers of The Onion do so well in fact, that they’ve successfully fooled some people into believing that JK Rowling supported Satanism.

Aside from making me laugh, I also believe mimicking The Onion is a great creative exercise. The challenge is to be as straight-faced as possible while writing or drawing about totally hilariously surreal situations. This helps build a contract worker’s ability to present any subject matter as professionally as possible, while helping you master the art of being ironic. For reference, visit theonion.com and especially my favorite section, their “editorial cartoons“!
