Five Must-Haves for International Communication

by Rico on August 14th, 2008

For some reason, my fellow freelancers have been writing about international freelancing, where you cater to a global clientele. I can see the reasoning behind the interest though, especially if you live in a third-world country.

In any case, before you even think of communication on an international scale, you should be familiar with what you absolutely, positively, must have.

A Reliable and Speedy Internet Connection. Save yourself from the frustration. Sign up for a service provider that promises and really delivers on speed and reliability. Paying more for peace of mind and constant online access is worth it.

Skype. Need I say more? The primary factor driving Skype’s popularity is its relatively reliability, compared to competitors. It’s simply the best way to communicate with clients through audio and webcam, usually for free!

A Good Headset. A standalone mic and speakers work. But sometimes the best way to converse with a client is hands-free. A headset keeps the mike close to your mouth, keeps conversations private (or at least what the other on the line is saying), and keeps your hands free to type while talking.

A Communications Budget. Sometimes you need to pay for Skype Out, long-distance calls, and even for direct courier services. Make sure you have some funds set aside, so that if and when you agree to foot the bill, you’ll remain on financially sound ground.

Good Email Communication Skills. Learn how to maximize every email sent to clients and colleagues—and how to gently persuade them to do the same—so that you spend less time waiting for details on how to proceed.

What else would you consider crucial for international communications with clients?
