Focusing on a Multi-Task Device

by Rico on July 1st, 2007

802981_focus_of_engineering_2.jpgYes, computers can do so much. It wouldn’t be surprised if a model coming out next year could cook your breakfast and drive you to work. That’s why they’ve become extremely popular for personal and business use.

But alas, since computers are capable of a lot of things, they also create a lot of new distractions. Just as Leo writes over at Freelance Switch:

Email. …an endless stream of interruptions…

Internet. …Disconnect, and get work done.

Chat/IM/Twitter. …for the most part, it is just chit chat and an unproductive use of your time…

Games. …Get rid of the games or block the sites from your browser to free up a lot of time.

Yes, the PC is a minefield of time-wasters. But we just can’t stop using computers, because they’re becoming an indispensable part of business (should you write down your presentation on large sheets of Manila paper, or use PowerPoint?). So how do we take full advantage of their capabilities, without letting their multi-faceted nature keep us from getting things done?

Easy: close any applications and windows you don’t need for a project. If you need to type a proposal for example, just leave your word processor open, as well as any references you may need to consult.

That’s the irony here. The computing power of your desktop or laptop, capable of doing many things concurrently, becomes effective when you use it for one task at a time.
