Contract Worker - Freelancing Experiences

Follow Your Parents or Follow Your Dreams?

by Rico on July 30th, 2008

Somewhat related to doing things differently than your ancestors, yet another conversation in LinkedIn Answers has caught my attention. Mr. Larry Feign is totally real when he asks “Did your mother want you to be what you are now? If mine had had her way I’d be a doctor instead…or would have been, until enough malpractice suits put me out of business. What did your mom want you to be?” Continue reading to see the best answer in my humble opinion.

For those who have parents who simply will not accept their current line of work I would summarize it as a choice. Which is more valuable in the long term. Doing the job that you enjoy/choose, or having your parents approval. I’ve found personally that even if parents never end up “approving” of ones career choices, they will at least have more respect for you than that of a house-pet if you follow your own ambitions.

While the last sentence of Andrew Lowell’s answer uses a somewhat iffy choice of words, I totally agree with him. My parents for instance, wouldn’t exactly approve if I suddenly quite my day job and tried making a living exclusively from freelancing. Yet they do understand that I’m my own person. As Lowell says, I really do feel they will have more respect for if I manage to find what I’m really good at and do it really well. Slowly, I’m realizing that freelancing is perhaps the best way to maximize my natural strengths and talents.

In any case, whatever I’ll do, I’ll follow my dreams. Even if it’s not exactly what my parents had in mind. At least I’m lucky enough to have parents who are willing to let me do my own thing. What about you?
