Freelance Myth #1: It’s Easy to be a Contract Worker
Congratulations to freelance writer Kathy for scoring an interview with Lori Widmer. And the whole theme of that is “the other side of the freelance world - the side where work is uppermost.”
Many people choose to make a living exclusively from freelancing, because they’ve been hearing all about the perks of such a career path. But the fact remains that you still have to work. If you don’t actively look for clients, allocate time to accomplish projects, and…shudder…push yourself, freelancing will get you nowhere. Bumming around the house is not work. So is giving in to distractions and temptations.
It’s not easy to be a Contract Worker because work will always be work, even if it’s own your own terms. In other words, to maximize the benefits of freelancing, you still have to get things done. It’s great to avoid the daily commute, have better control over your schedule, and choose for the people you work for. But nothing replaces commitment and dedication.

Thanks for helping to spread the word about this issue. If enough *real* writers share their experiences, maybe the whole idea will be shot down before it reaches cruising altitude.

I think the idea has already entered the stratosphere unfortunately. But I’m sure if successful freelancers continue to share their real-life experiences, we can bring all those wrong expectations back to earth.
