Contract Worker - Freelancing Experiences

Freelancers Have the Time to Make a Difference

A few hours ago I enjoyed some coffee with Gang Badoy of RockEd Philippines (we were finalizing the plans for Shai Coggins’ blogger mixer). As she shared her experiences out on the field, helping prison inmates find their inner poet and figuring out ways to get books to remote communities, I wondered what made that all possible.

You see, it was obvious to me that such adventures took up a lot of Gang’s time. It was clear that she didn’t rely on the standard 9-to-5 to put food on her table. When I asked Gang (as discreetly as was possible) where she got the money to pay the bills, she revealed that companies paid her to facilitate team-building seminars.

In other words, Gang earns a living as a freelance consultant. Thanks to her flexible schedule, she gets to concentrate on her advocacy work. At the very least, her efforts have helped people learn about the difficult problems facing Philippine society, and what steps can be taken to address them.

Easily another example of what’s great about freelancing.
