Contract Worker - Freelancing Experiences

Freelanch Myth #4: You Can’t be a Freelancer and Hold a Day Job at the Same Time

by Rico on May 2nd, 2007

Back when I began writing for Contract Worker, I wrote about three options: why you should be a freelancer, why you shouldn’t be a freelancer, and why it’s possible to be a freelancer and a corporate worker at the same time.

The fact is that over the last few months I’ve been exercising the third choice, maintaining a day job while doing some writing and design at home. To be honest it’s not easy to give all my commitments the time they deserve. And there’s more to life than just work. But the opportunities gained by maintaining two careers at the same time have been invaluable.

While exclusively working as a contract worker or a freelancer means always working on your own terms, a freelancer’s career isn’t that stable in the beginning. Contacts need to be made, experience needs to be built, and food needs to be on the table. For better or worse, the support system of a great employer makes this possible.

It doesn’t have to be like this forever. In fact, it can’t be. Ultimately you’ll have to commit to one career track to really be successful in work. But when that time comes, I’m sure my experiences in the corporate world will give me the experience and exposure to make my move into freelance exclusivity smooth.
