Getting Into the Productive Groove: Just How do you do it?

by Rico on August 15th, 2008

The post preceding this one was written in less than 10 minutes, representing a burst of creativity and productivity. You all know what it’s called; that productive groove is usually a rare and gratifying experience. The mere volume of output produced practically effortlessly in a relatively short period of time always creates the welcome sensation of fulfillment. I’ve listed down some of the factors that have led to my own productive grooves. Hopefully they will be of use to you.

Disgust Over a Non-Productive Day. Sometimes I’ve realized that I’ve done nothing useful for the day. It’s during these times I literally feel like I’m wasting the air I breath (or more practically, the money clients pay to work). Out of guilt, I will myself into productive concentration.

A Concrete and Singular Idea. Many of you probably know this as the eureka moment. The arrival of a concept so clear and sensible is usually very sudden, resulting in a desperation to express this idea as effectively as possible. It’s at these times I let my creativity take over, trusting that it will guide my expression (in this case writing) towards quality output.

Desperation. Somewhat related to disgust, this involves the sudden realization that a deadline is closing in, and no significant progress has been made towards it. It’s a bit disconcerting to acknowledge that you’ve dug yourself into a productive hole, but luckily it always pushes me to simply deliver.

Optimism. Sometimes I feel like I can do no wrong, and this sudden boost of confidence drives me to get something done. In such situations, my doubts are suddenly satisfied by something I can’t really define. And again, I simply let my creativity take over.

I hope the above factors represent a clear map towards productivity for you. In my case, as I’m aware of what’s been listed in this post, I always try to maximize them. In other words, I try to maximize my disgust over non-productivity, the formulation of clear ideas, a desperation to get things done, and optimism. Maybe these factors alone can push into a productive groove, but as always I welcome any comments you may have.
