Now here’s something you should make reading time for, since it directly affects how lucrative your time is. Monika details The Hidden Costs of Freelancing, listing and discussing each and every one of them in detail.

It’s interesting that she ends with “Plan well - suffer less”. Aside from reinforcing my infatuation with a good plan, it also reveals an additional hidden cost. A contract worker’s free-flowing schedule makes their personal lives more susceptible to business; failing to plan properly may lead to last-minute rainchecks as you scramble to finish a project on time and to spec.

Again, I cannot stress the importance of good planning and time management (I’ll admit, I’m sometimes lacking in this regard). These two valuable skills let freelancers maximize the advantages of their non-traditional setup, getting to work how, when, and where they want to, while still being able to enjoy their off-time.
