Remain Productive on Those Hot and Lazy Days

by Rico on April 26th, 2008

985131_sunny_beach.jpgAs someone from a tropical country, I understand how heat limits productivity, by making it simply too hot to work or worse, make you sleepy. But you can easily deal with that and continue getting things done.

During hot and humid days, all I’d want to do is take a nap. It really becomes harder to deal with deadlines when the heat is making you sleepy. Read to find out what you can do—aside from working in an air-conditioned room of course.

  1. Wear cool clothes. Not “cool” in the figurative sense. If you’re working at home, there’s nothing wrong with wearing a tank top while working. I even propose that guys go topless if the heat is bad enough.
  2. Take that nap. Sometimes, all you have to do is give in to what your body wants. A fifteen-minute nap does wonders for sleepyheads, and you’ll no longer fight against sleepiness.
  3. Take a shower. Imagine the cool water coursing over your body, pulling away the heat as it splashes on the shower floor. A shower is always refreshing and keeps you alert for work.
  4. Drink lots of liquids. Regularly drinking cool drinks as you work will keep your body temperature down, which reduces any ill productivity-related effects of heat.
  5. Work at night. This should be considered a last resort, but nighttime is definitely cooler, for obvious reasons.

Of course, before you do any of these, make sure that you’re working in a well-ventilated and cool place. And if you can work outside, why not get things done in your backyard or porch?
