How Blogging Can Help Your Freelancing Career

by Rico on November 17th, 2006

You can use your personal blog as a marketing tool, showcasing your skills to the world. A blog raises its author’s profile, even if it doesn’t enjoy a lot of traffic, because by publishing posts regularly, you gain an online presence. And through search engines, following links, or social bookmarking sites like digg, a prospective client may discover you. So how do you increase your chances of him offering you a job?

Upload Your Portfolio. Create a separate page that lists your accomplishments. You can even write a post highlighting each of them as they’re finished. By taking the time to write about your projects, you can give readers a good impression regarding your skills. My own portfolio page links to individual posts that feature individual projects.

Show You Write Well. I’m sure that blogging has improved my writing; I still blush when I look at my early posts. Since all the posts are dated, I can even track my development as a writer. Modesty aside, my personal blog helped me gain two problogging commitments (including this one), and most of my freelance writing projects.

Make it Easy to Contact You. A contact form, preferably placed on a separate page, hits two birds with one stone. It provides potential clients an easy way to offer you a job, and you don’t have to post your email publicly for spammers to see.

[…] I’ve already written how blogs help freelancers. I forgot to mention though that blogs are cheap; domain and hosting only cost Php 1,800 (around $36, and I know people in the US pay even less) a year. With what you’ll earn after your online presence highlights your talents, this is peanuts. […]

[…] This kind of gift is great, because it actually benefits both the giver and the receiver. It goes without saying that whoever you choose to work for will probably receive high-quality work without spending a single cent. And you accomplish yet another project to show off in your portfolio. Some charitable institutions, despite their apparent lack of funds, boast a high-profile, which will rub off on you. Not to mention you probably gain some good karma. […]

[…] In this case, I’d suggest writing some technical articles for free, and start highlighting them to potential clients. In a more general sense, this means building a portfolio to show prospects what you can do (a blog is a good way to do this). And while you do this, you’re probably not earning, which can be quite a bummer. It’s very easy to lose motivation while giving your very best without any obvious prize. […]

[…] I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Maintaining a personal blog has helped my freelance career tremendously. Aside from letting prospective clients know who am I and what I can do, it’s good practice for my writing and communication skills. Not to mention it provides a direct way of contacting me, through the contact form. […]
