Contract Worker - Freelancing Experiences

How do I Find Clients?

Locating and convincing clients to hire is another popular problem for freelancers, because it has a lot to do with how much money they can earn within a certain period. Freelancers who acquire contracts left and right will no doubt make more, if they can submit on time and to spec.

For me, finding clients to work for is more a matter of retaining them than looking for new ones. Once you get a client, do your best—within reason—to manage their expectations properly and to fulfill them. Again, submit on time and to spec, as promised.

It’s professionalism that keeps the relationship between a client and the freelancer good. Work hard to enter into relationships with clients who are willing to pay what your work is worth, and to cultivate them. If it’s possible, become a retainer for them to ensure a relatively steady source of income.

On top of that however, you shouldn’t ignore trying to acquire new clients. Personally, I spend a few hours of a week marketing my skills. I look around for clients who may have needs that I can fulfill. The next step after that is to find out how to contact them, and send them a brief of what I can do—and how I can help them.

This is why I have to really get down to perfecting my personal website, which I use as a marketing tool. I’ve already talked about how websites can make your efforts easier.

In short, you have to be serious about your clients. Serious in the sense that you have to actively seem them out, and actively maintain a good working relationship with them.
