How to be a Book Author With a Day Job 101
Ah yes, yet another needle in the LinkedIn Answers haystack, particularly because it deals with freelancers who maintain a day job. William asks:
Any suggestions for writing a book while keeping a job to pay the bills? Has your experience, or that of those you know been to
1) get up earlier than you used to
2) stay up later
3) weekends
4) live lean for a year than quit your day job or substantially lower your hours?
The sole (as of yet) answer is pretty good. Rob suggests hiring a professional writer to help you keep you on track. But I don’t think everyone can afford that.
An ideal (in my opinion) solution for authors-to-be is number 3, weekends. True, I once asked if you were protecting your weekends at all costs, but I now believe that only applies to those who make a living exclusively from freelancing.
The reason is simple: if you lose sleep throughout the week, by budgeting time for your book, your performance at work and at home will both suffer. You simply cannot do effective creative work if you lack the energy or are too sleepy.
Besides, setting aside several hours over the weekend will let you focus exclusively on your side-project. And if you remain on track, the extra work will add up before you know it. Have an answer of your own? Feel free to share as a comment below.
