How to Make it Easier for Your Dreams to Come True

by Rico on July 13th, 2008

The same concept that makes good planning—specificity—also applies to pursuing your dreams. In other words, you have a better chance of fulfilling your dreams if you make them as specific as possible.

The Why of Specific Dreams

I’m pretty sure everyone wants to be as wealthy as possible. But much fewer people bother quantifying it (i.e., “I want to make $1M in passive income a year”). That makes it harder to come up with the necessary steps to accomplish that goal.

By making your dream specific, the groundwork is laid for the creation of a step-by-step plan to achieve it. It gives you a better idea of how much you have to earn/perform/work to reach it. With those in mind, it becomes easier to orient your future to the achievement of your dreams.

Contrast this with a generic “I want make to make as much money as possible” dream. So you work as hard as you can, but your plans don’t have a clear focus; it may take a while for you to realize that your initial actions, oriented towards making as much money as possible in the short term aren’t actually sustainable activities that lead to long-term benefit.

My Sample Dream

Dreams don’t have to be life-lasting. Right now, for example, I dream of acquiring DVDs of every Star Trek episode out there, a passion that I’ve calculated to cost me $1000 (on Amazon). With that figure in mind, I have a clear picture of how much I need to save in a month, or how much more money I need to make.

The process of calculating the cost of my dream has another benefit. Instead of buying Star Trek DVDs piecemeal, I was able to identify which items on Amazon represented the best value. In other words, instead of blindly buying the next Star Trek DVD as the money became available, I took a step back, and planned better. That’s why I ended up with a buying plan that provides maximum value for my money.

What dreams do you have, and how specific are they?
