Contract Worker - Freelancing Experiences

Is Coffee Dead?

by Rico on August 21st, 2008

The eagerness I had for productive work yesterday is now gone, and it’s probably because I’m really sleepy. All I want to do now is find the nearest bed, rest my head on those really soft pillows, and give in to my drowsiness.

But I know better than to do that, especially since projects are pending. So I tried many things to wake myself up. Here’s what happened.

Coffee. Made a cup for myself, but to no avail. When I started drinking coffee as a cure for sleepiness, I was amazed with how quickly it boosted my energy. Unfortunately, coffee turned out to be an addictive drug; I had to drink more and more to stay awake. Eventually it started having no effect on me, despite drinking 4 cups straight! Verdict: Ineffective.

Playing a Game. I’ll be the first to admit that work is work and play is play. No matter how compelling my work was, a quick video game was always more exciting for me, and immediately clears my system of any sleepiness. So I fired up a game and promised myself a quick 15-minute session. Unfortunately, I realized later on that I wasted an hour of my productive time. Verdict: Effective, but too engrossing and distracting.

Jumping Jacks. An hour after I forced myself away from the game, I realized I was getting sleepy again. I also realized that I was feeling sluggish, and thought that a few minutes of vigorous physical activity would help. So I stood up and started doing some jumping jacks, since they weren’t too tiring and didn’t require that much space. After about 50 of them, the sleepiness cleared from my system again, and so far I haven’t encountered any problems. Verdict: Effective, no cons experienced yet.

Sleeping Early. As I finally finished my work day, thankfully finishing what I allotted for the period, I considered going to bed. I had nothing better to do, and it was already midnight. Besides, maybe I felt sleepy the whole day because I only slept for three hours the previous night? Verdict: You can try everything to keep yourself awake, but having energy for the day starts with sleeping properly!
