I’ve Given Up on Vista

by Rico on August 25th, 2008

I’ve tried to bear it, but I simply can’t. Windows Vista really represents a step backward from Windows XP.

For all it’s apparent security problems and the like, XP was still a pretty powerful and versatile piece of hardware software. All that was needed to make it run perfectly was a little tweaking.

That isn’t true for Windows Vista. And it’s not only the performance downgrade, even on a particularly decent laptop like the Dell XPS M1330. Programs—and games—that used to work without a hitch on Windows XP simply fail in Vista.

I’m thankful that numerous workarounds have been posted on the net, but I got a more powerful laptop to reap the benefits of the more advanced hardware, not to encounter random frustrations with the pre-installed OS.

Is it any wonder that Dell itself has started offering computers pre-installed with Windows XP again? They’re still bundling copies of Windows Vista as a future upgrade, but something tells me buyers won’t be availing of them any time soon.

Now is time for me to take the plunge. I’ve cleared my schedule until tomorrow. Right now I’m downloading the drivers needed to get my hardware to work on Windows XP. The instructions posted for an XP “upgrade” are quite detailed, though needs a little updating. Naturally of course, I’ve backed up all my important data.

Wish me luck! Hopefully the next time I post on this blog, it will be on a laptop running real proper—on Windows XP.

“…XP was still a pretty powerful and versatile piece of hardware.”

Sorry to be a pedant, but XP is actually software. And I wholeheartedly agree: XP is better.

Ha - was about to shoot you a mail that Windows XP is a software, but seems like I have been beaten to it. :)

That said, I should say give Ubuntu (or one of those other GNU/Linux distributions) a try. And this I am not saying without much background.

I do have Windows Vista, but thanks to dual boot, I have not logged into it for the past two or three months. I have even completed a couple of freelancing gigs will all open source tools (Inkscape, GIMP and the lot).

    Guilty as charged guys! :P

Vyoma, I’d love to try out Ubuntu. An office mate does wonders with it, running XP on some virtual machine or something like that, but I’m not the software genius that you are! :P

[…] I’ve done it! I’ve “upgraded” (or rather downgraded) my laptop to Windows XP! […]
