Keep Your Business Relationships Solid and Avoid Lawsuits
A lot of freelancers conduct their business informally. There’s nothing wrong with that, but they should also consider formalizing the submission process. It will save them from a lot of trouble in the long run.
By asking clients to acknowledge his receipt of your finished project (by signing a paper or through e-mail if you’re on the other side of the world), you have a written record that he’s satisfied with what you’ve made—and the fact that he’s received it.
This protects you because you have proof that you’ve fulfilled your end of the bargain. You’ve submitted the project on time and to spec, and he owes you compensation. Things don’t have to be so one-sided though.
You can also extend courtesy by acknowledging that you’ve received your reward (again, on paper or through e-mail). Now your client has a written record that he’s held up his end. This simple act of recording your transactions for posterity will keep things clear between you and your client, ensuring a solid and smooth business relationship. It also minimizes the confusion that, when taken to the extreme, leads to ugly lawsuits.
