Keeping Track of Your Many Projects

To be successful at freelancing, you’ll have to manage many tasks at the same time.

Now before you accuse me of contradicting myself, allow some clarification. Even if you concentrate on one or few disciplines, that doesn’t mean you’ll be dealing with one project at a time. Many undertakings don’t take one sitting to finish, especially if you have to wait for more input or resources from a client. Naturally, you’d move on to another project, coming back later when you can.

There’s nothing wrong with this if you’ve done everything you can. The problem is, it’s easy to lose track of pending assignments, and forget to return to a project once what you need arrives. That’s why it’s important that something reminds you certain jobs aren’t finished yet. A daily checklist might help, and you can even write it down as an outline, with each subtask underneath each item.

Whatever you decide to do, accomplishing projects within time and spec involves making sure that none of them become neglected.

I’ve been getting into using online tools to keep myself organized– ActiveCollab is installed on my website, and it allows me project and to-do lists, and multi-user management for my fellow freelance collaborators.

It is very similar to Basecamp from 37Signals, but free.

And everything syncs with my Mac, Google Calendar and Treo, so I have all my lists all the time.

Nice… how do you move everything to your Treo?
