Know Your Clients’ Vacations
As a non-American who periodically works for Americans (and Europeans and Asians), I make it a point to know when US holidays are.
For instance, the recently concluded 4th of July long weekend must’ve been a boon for freelancers and clients alike. Freelancers were freed from work (or regrettably had extra time to clear their backlog) because they had no one to work for. Clients weren’t outsourcing anything because they were busy enjoying a rare 3-day weekend.
The point is that any freelancer should be aware of when their clients’ holidays are—even if they’re in the same country or timezone. A danger with the freelancing schedule is that no vacations are planned, because we don’t usually follow the traditional corporate schedule anyway. Stay aware of when your clients get a break, so that you can enjoy some off-time yourselves, without worrying about whether you’ll still be able to submit those projects on time and to spec.
