It’s About Who You Know and Who Knows You
Here’s why I believe freelancers shouldn’t stay home all day: the more people you get to know, the more chances you have of getting projects.
All of us start out as nobodies (well, most of us at least). So, you’ll have to market yourself to become known. Send out targeted proposals to people or organizatinos you’d like to work with. Go to events, meet interesting people who have needs, and explain to them how you can solve their problems. Make sure everyone knows what you can do.
This is the first step of getting known: some people may call it pimping yourself. It’s nothing that dirty, because you aren’t whoring yourself. You’re actually pimping your work. You’re letting everyone know what you’re capable of, and how to reach you.
The second step of becoming known is of course, delivering. No matter how great your proposal or introduction is, your client’s lasting impression is actually based on how well you complete your end of the deal. Not from the first time you meet. Producing on time and to spec lets everyone know that you’re worth the money.
But you’ll have nothing to fulfill if you don’t have a project. Which is why you must do your best to go around and advertise yourself (casually of course, no one likes a boastful freelancer). Make sure that the people you know also know you.
