Laptop Battery Productivity Hack: Get More Done Within an Hour or Two

by Rico on May 15th, 2008

battery-icon.gifIf you own a laptop, congratulations! Your mobile computer has a built-in productivity tool.

All you have to do is to unplug your laptop. While it’s running on battery power, it becomes a timer; the challenge is to get as much work done before the battery drains. It’s a productivity game I’ve started playing recently, and I’ve found that forcing yourself to work on limited time keeps you focused on what you have to do.

Of course, this is hardly a real limitation, as you can always plug your laptop back in. But playing this game requires the right mindset, an outlook that will concentrate on the tasks at hand and avoid indulging in distractions. Think of the laptop battery productivity hack as a guide of sorts; it won’t work unless you’re willing to commit to the setup.

The battery hack has an added benefit: it also keeps you from spending too much time working. By making you to deal with those deadlines as promptly as possible, the hack maximizes your time. At the same time, you know that, when your laptop is screaming (figuratively) for a wall socket, you can shut down, plug it in, and enjoy some downtime.

Interesting idea. Ive definitely been there, to some degree, at least with regard to rushing to finish a paper while I’m running on battery at the library.

Also, I didn’t realize how low-res windows taskbar iconography is.. haha.

Yeah, and that’s already Windows XP! It really is an unflattering screenshot, hehe.

Does the quality of your work suffer, or do you manage to still produce something decent?

I don’t think the quality of my work suffers much, if at all. Being cramped for time tends to make me focus better, once I get past the stress of the “ohmygawdihavetohurry” stage. When I throw a little classical or low-key jazz into the mix, not only my productivity increases, but generally my work gets better too.

In fact, I’m doing it right now, without even realizing it! Writing a paper on the couch while on battery, listening to The Bad Plus. haha.
