Politics Don’t Apply to Freelancers, Part II

Last time I discussed freelancing and politics, I wrote about how they’re mutually exclusive. The reason was that, working away from the office, they don’t have to play the game.

Much has been said about that infamous ABC debate. The way I see it, it’s more proof that it’s great to be a freelancer.

As Hillary and Obama were busy deflecting questions about what I also consider minor issues—too busy to meaningfully communicate their respective platforms—all I could think of was how these are basically a non-factor in the freelancing world. That’s because what’s really important for a freelancer and their client are results.

What only matters to a client is whether or not you’ve met his requirements on time and to spec. Your silver tongue may be able to deflect any intial doubts if you’re running behind schedule. Ultimately, however, if you have nothing to show on the deadline, your failure will be very obvious.

But this also means that you can concentrate on speaking with your actions, not words. You can focus on simply getting the job done, once again free from the politics that has poisoned many office environments. And the recent debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Oh boy, I disagree… at least as far as national and local politics go (obviously office politics don’t happen in my life, unless you consider the cat…). But politics effect all sorts of things, from how much tax I pay to where clients can park, to even the number of clients I have - plus there’s the whole business of how our society is in the world… that impacts me too… so go vote, for crying out loud.

Haha, point taken Anne. I do agree that it’s important for freelancers—and practically anyone—to vote. Who knows, they could create anti-freelancing laws right? But I was just concentrating on the results aspect of a freelancing job. If it’s just between you and a client, there’s just less opportunity for any sort of politicking to occur.
