Quick Idea-Generation Techniques, #1

by Rico on July 21st, 2008

light-bulb.jpgGot less than five minutes to come up with an idea for a project? Let’s go straight to the point shall we?

Try to remember what you did for the day, and get some ideas from that

To be honest, a lot of what I’ve written here came from my daily life. As I found solutions to my problems, I tried to see how I could package the solution for others, and share it with them. Actually, with so much happening in my life today, the real challenge is figuring out how to make my epiphanies accessible to an audience exempt from my experiences.

How to Make This Work

This quick idea-generation technique does have an important requirement. To increase your chances of formulating interesting ideas from your experiences, your experiences must be as varied and interesting as you can make them. As you enjoy new realizations, take the time if you can, figuring out how you can translate the experience into something universally understandable.

I know this process of translation can be very challenging, especially when we’re used to keeping our thoughts to ourselves. But forcing yourself through this creative process can conceivably turn you into a better communicator. An important aspect of good communication, aside from understanding your target audience’s point of view, is coming up with effective methods to adapt your message to your recipient’s perspectives. In short, you’d better start practicing now!

From my point of view, a life full of interesting, idea-generating experiences means not spending the whole day in front of the computer, trying to get some work done. Get out as often as you can, and you will also encounter new things that you can turn into projects that earn your keep.

Most importantly, with more ideas at your disposal, it becomes easier to submit projects on time and to spec.
