Looking Good With the Right Words
It’s amazing what a big difference the right words make.
Jeremy Wright’s unfortunate encounter with US immigration may have happened quite a while ago, while b5media’s scoring $2 million in venture capital implies a “legitimate” trust in the profitability of blogging, but for a lot of people, the word “blogger” still sounds unprofessional.
With good reason actually; a lot of bloggers aren’t professionals. Only a select few can make a living through blogging. Whether or not you agree with me, I digress. The point is that sometimes describing what you do with a different, yet synonymous, title may come in handy. When marketing your services as a freelancer to potential clients, use the right words. I’m a blogger may still be ignored in some circles, especially if you have few widely accepted credentials, but I’m involved in various online publishing ventures always gets some attention. ;)

I dunno… if you can say “I’m involved with various online publishing ventures” and mean it, it should work… but if you can’t, stick with blogging… or even writing or freelance writing.
My hunch is it’s more important what you actually believe about yourself that’s important… when you believe you speak with authority.

Oh yeah, I totally agree on this one. I am a full time stay at home dad but make a supplemental income doing blogs and affiliate programs online. People ask me what I do and I used to say I blog. The eyes would roll. But now I say “I publish articles for various online entities and online magazines, as well as refer clients to already established businesses and receive a percentage.”
Then they sort of perk up and ask questions.

Rico - point well taken. And a reminder that this industry is ‘miles to go’ before it is accepted as a credible, mainstream marketing strategy.

Anne: Great point Anne, some people can be convincing enough to break through barriers. But won’t using the right words makes things easier, for anybody? I for one have a hard time speaking with authority, even though I really know and believe in what I’m saying.
Steve Remington: Know what you mean about the eyes rolling; it’s even worse the person you’re talking is polite enough not to be obvious, but you get the feeling he’s looking down at your job nevertheless. Your comment also made me realize that perhaps another way to make an impact is to be more specific about what you do.
