Surviving Without Access to a Computer

by Rico on April 17th, 2007

More often than not, you use a computer to get things done. Especially if you’re a writer who needs to produce thousands of words every month. And for some, the computer is indispensable. Web designers come to mind.

But, one day you’ll get cut off from your electronic tools. A disaster may cut power temporarily. You may have left your laptop somewhere. Unfortunately, your clients won’t suffer such excuses, as you’re paid to deliver on time and to spec (of course, in extremely urgent matters, such as life and death, they’ll be a bit more accommodating). So how do you survive without access to a computer?

Perhaps an old reliable—pen(cil) and paper—is the answer. A writer can of course write down his work and type them in later. And this is a reason why we shouldn’t say goodbye to handwriting. Aside from proper penmanship slowly dying, my hand is getting cramped as I write this post down. Even if I mainly write with a computer anyway, I notice my letters getting more illegible every time I write a note, fill up a form, and God knows, scribble my signature.

I digress. The point is that you can still get work done, even with mere pen and paper. Instead of sitting around and doing nothing, you can just write down your ideas, and encode them later.

And for projects where words aren’t enough, paper still works. It’s possible to plan things out with sketches, diagrams, and outlines. In fact, the best plans are laid this way, with the free-flowing nature of the pen helping your creativity express itself. If you’re unable to execute because you don’t have access to your electronic tools, turn your bad luck into an opportunity by taking more time to work out and solidify your plan.

Tomorrow, I’ll talk about certain gadgets that also help you survive without a computer.
