The Case for Freelance Advertising

by Rico on July 4th, 2007

Here’s some great copy from a McGraw-Hill advertisement, featured on page 118 of Ogilvy on Advertising:

I don’t know who you are
I don’t know your company
I don’t know your company’s product
I don’t know what your company stands for
I don’t know your company’s customers
I don’t know your company’s record
I don’t know your company’s reputation
Now—what was it you wanted to sell me?

Just take away the second line and “company” and you’ve pretty much summed up the challenges of marketing your freelance skills.

Ah, how I know that so well… I’ve been a freelance contractor for over 2 years now. It’s been a challenge, but I wouldn’t go back to a 9-5 office job… if I never had to.

But I’m sure the increased opportunities and better control over your schedule is worth the challenge. With great chances comes great responsibility. :)
