The Four Kinds of Clients and Dealing With Them: Purgatory
From experience, all clients fall under four categories, depending on how organized and demanding they are. Welcome to a four-part series on Hell, Limbo, Purgatory, and Heaven. Part 3 of 4 is about The Purgatory Client.
Now we get to organized clients. Purgatory clients may be demanding, but they back it up with a clear plan. They’ll ask for changes to a draft because they think some changes are needed to fit their vision better, not because they want something totally different. Working for someone who knows what they want is a blessing, no doubt about it. But their controlling nature may suffocate you.
Yet, this close supervision may not be so bad after all. Since the purgatory client is organized enough to schedule a project’s progress, his check-ups are expected. Unlike the totally unscheduled interruptions of the hell and limbo clients. In fact, if you’re not ready with what’s needed, it’s nobody’s fault but your own, since everything’s been laid out for you.
And that’s basically how you should deal with a purgatory client. Play it straight. Meet the deadlines, and provide what’s expected. Even the client feels the need to ask for it. Practicing such professionalism is very important. Due to the demanding nature of a purgatory client, not fulfilling his requests will cause more demands, leading to more stress.
In other words, it’s up to you to keep your working relationship with a purgatory client safe and sound. The potential for their demanding nature to cause problems is there, but only if you let it happen.
