The Secret to Mastering Any Skill

by Rico on April 7th, 2008

Out of necessity, I’ve spent the last few weeks brushing up my understanding of CSS. It used to be a mysterious web design tool that wasn’t cooperating with my creative vision. Now however, I’m using it more effectively than ever. By no means am I a CSS master, but I realized that the steps I took towards this better understanding can be applied to practically any skill.

  • Motivation. Without going into too much detail, I had to better understand CSS.
  • Focus. Properly motivated, I was more willing to do the necessary research and experimentation. It helped that the web features practically millions of articles on CSS.
  • Admiration. I was also lucky enough to be in the company of those who know their CSS. So I admired their work, and asked them for tips and what to look out for.
  • Action. Throughout this entire process, I was coding CSS, making adjustments as necessary. As I did, I understood.

In short, I was motivated enough to learn a skill, and to focus on l earning it. I was humble enough to admire the work of others, and learn from them. But most importantly, I acted.

What skill have you learned recently? Do you think you have a chance of mastering it?
