Three Obstacles to Avoid While Sticking to a Plan

Conventional wisdom dictates that we need a plan to become successful. Planning is important for Freelancers and Contract Workers in particular, since they’re solely responsible for the direction and development of their careers. They should take projects that advance long-term goals, unless they want to end up having an unfocused career—and life.

Yet many make the mistake of thinking a plan is enough. For a plan to be truly effective, you have to bridge the gap between intention and action. It is up to you to make your plans a reality, by sticking to them. Sounds easy, right?

Unfortunately, if you don’t avoid these three obstacles, you’ll never be able to stick to a plan:

  1. Following a Wrong Plan. There’s no point in following a plan that doesn’t suit your needs, dreams, and practicalities. That’s why you should budget a lot of time when coming up with one. Forcing yourself to follow something that you ultimately don’t like is a waste of time, and you can only push yourself so much. You should also consider all possibilities and developments: can your plan adapt to them?
  2. Not Trusting Your Plan. There’s nothing wrong with making minor adjustments, but never totally abandon your plan. It’s so easy to do so in this world of instant gratification, where seemingly greener pastures are everywhere. But constantly changing your mind will never lead to success.
  3. Failing to Completely Accomplish Your Plan. Congratulations, you’ve accomplished 80% of your plan, with 20% to go. But you shouldn’t relax and just take your time finishing the last part. Because maintaining your gains usually depends on achieving 100%.

As long as you avoid these three things, you’ll have no problems sticking to your plan and finding success.
