US Congress to Pass Anti-Freelancer Law
Today is a sad day for freelancers everywhere folks. For if the US Congress has no problems limiting opportunities for freelancers, won’t the legislatures of other countries follow suit?
The Office Worker Safety Bill, which is about to be passed, calls for companies to limit their outsourcing activities. It’s the specifics that are scary for freelancers. The bill requires businesses to commission not more than one hour of work a week from any freelancer, and proscribes stiff penalties for violators.
As Rep. Abu Dhabi (D-Hawaii), one of the bills author’s summarizes, “We are sick and tired of freelancers who work at home in their pajamas. Worse, some of these despicable citizens flaunt their freedom, feeding the jealousy of brave Americans heroes who come to the office early and leave late. These freelancers think that there are more important things than efficient corporate service, such as spending frivolous time with friends and family. On their own discretion nonetheless!”
Richard Masterson, the head of the FANG (Freelance Action Now Group), contended that “Mr. Abercrombie and his associates fail to understand that being an effective freelancer is even more challenging, since we lack the support systems easily available to corporate workers. Contract Workers may have a more flexible schedule, but they also need to be very active in marketing their services, maintaining good relations with clients, and place more importance on their professional reputation.”
Obviously, as a freelancer, I am totally against this bill! Freelancers who are based in America, you have a chance to help the world! Contact your Representative as soon as you can, and express your disapproval over the bill! You can stop this unjust law from passing, and prevent other countries from following suit. Let us all realize that today is April Fool’s Day!
