What Does 50 Cent’s Ayo Technology Have to do With Successful Freelancing?
The catchy rhythm of 50 cent’s Ayo Technology has been streaming out of my laptop speakers lately, and while the hip-hop song is full of the misogynistic boastings that characterizes the genre, there is a hidden nugget that freelancers and contract workers can learn from.
During the chorus, Justin Timberlake chants: “I’m tired of using technology, I need you right in front of me.” An imaginative interpretation of this passage will remind you that successful freelancing depends on building real and personal relationships with clients. I’m tired of technology, why can’t we interact in a more authentic manner?
It so happens that lately, Lori Widmer has been sharing her experience with building genuine connections necessary for contract worker success:
With the help of some friends (possibly you?) and some of my own marketing experience, we’re going to relearn how to sell ourselves to potential clients. No more waiting in line with 1,200 other hopeful writers. We’re not going to hit the job boards. We’re going to hit the untapped markets - the ones in your neighborhood or the ones across the country (we’re not leaving the Internet totally behind). So if you have ideas or suggestions, let me know. We’re here to support each other, and that can only strengthen our profession in the long run.
So, aside from Contract Worker, subscribe to Word On the Page, ready your feed reader, and prepare to learn.

I was just saying to a colleague of mine today how we can be certain to lose our “people” skills if we don’t exercise them often. Network offline more to keep your people skills sharp.
