What Does Managing Online Forums Have to Do With Freelancing?

by Rico on July 12th, 2008

managing-online-forums.jpgMcGraw-Hill Education sent me a copy of Managing Online Forums the other day. Now, in terms of managing online communities, I don’t see where your average freelancer comes in. I mean, not even the majority of high-profile freelancers maintain forums right?

In any case, the book has been a very good read so far. Write Patrick O’ Keefe uses a very casual yet informative tone. While some of his advice may be common sense (and while others inspire “now why didn’t I think of that?” moments), Managing Online Forums is really a good resource for those who want to… manage online forums. But still…

It may be my limited imagination, but I only see online community management becoming relevant to freelancers when:

  • They’re hired to manage an online community
  • They’ve started a forum as a side project, found it really grew in activity, and what to maintain for their own and community members’ sake
  • They want to start a forum, attract like-minded people, and enjoy any insights or perspectives generated by the community

But that’s just me; if you know how else managing online forums can be relevant to freelancers, feel free to leave a comment below.
