What Freelancers Can Learn From Jollibee
Jollibee is a Filipino fast food chain that, believe it or not, beat McDonald’s at its own game, at least here in the Philippines. Jollibee’s success proves the effectivity of experimentation and adaptation.
Starting as a humble ice cream parlor put up back in 1975, Jollibee now has over a thousand branches in the Philippines, and over a hundred establishments in other countries like the United States, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonesia, Dubai and Brunei. What’s the secret behind their success?
Jollibee was always aware of what the market wanted. Over the years, it formulated and reformulated its menu to match the ever-changing tastes of the Filipino public, and now takes the same approach towards foreign customers.
The franchise took some risks and inevitably encountered some difficulties along the way. Its management always understood that making mistakes was the only way they could find the right formula to attract customers. They constantly tried new things, kept what worked, and dropped what flopped.
As you go about your freelance career, do you make an effort to keep track of your potential clients’s needs? Are you willing to experiment with various approaches and adapt your skill sets to match the demands of the market? More importantly, do you have the tools that help you keep track of your progress?
For example, if you’re a freelance photographer, you should have a good idea of how the client market uses pictures. Are they more interested in event photography, product presentations, or a certain style of composition?
You play around, going out of your comfort zone to try and take new kinds of pictures. Adapting your skill to match what clients need should be easy. Since you’ve taken the time to master the basics, you’re probably pretty versatile at your craft. What’s really important however is that you record the feedback you get from other people. Even if a prospect turns you down, you should learn why.
Learn, experiment, adapt, record: a pithy four-step statement that can help freelancers find success.
