What Makes One Project More Urgent Than the Other
Many times, freelancers and contract workers will have to get their priorities straight. Especially if they find themselves with a lot of stuff to do. The question is, how do you determine which projects are more important than others? If you break down each project using the three factors listed below, it’ll be much much easier to decide on the order of how you’ll go about things:
- Time. Obviously, the most important factor to consider is when the project is due. An important part of your freelance career is to fulfill your commitments and live up to your word. If you don’t, clients may be hesitant to hire you next time. Simply put, this factor overrides all others, and that’s why knowing exactly when the project is due is a great help.
- Difficulty. Which project requires more of your skill and intelligence to accomplish? Truth be told there are projects out there that you can do without thinking. You know which they are, and you should save those for last. Focus all your mental and physical energies into getting the hard stuff done first, before moving on to the easy ones. If you do the reverse, you may not have enough energy left to finish the harder projects.
- Equipment and Location. Sometimes a project needs certain kinds of equipment to accomplish. Or it can only be done in certain places. Examples include a painter need a special kind of paint, or a photographer needing a studio to do a shoot. If the equipment or location aren’t immediately available, and won’t be until a certain time, then you should concentrate on other projects.
I like to call these three the urgency factors, because they help determine which project is more urgent than the other. Which helps you decide which one you should focus on first. What are your urgency factors?
