Contract Worker - Freelancing Experiences

What’s Really Valuable for a Freelancer

by Rico on April 12th, 2008

Have you visited Brian Gardner’s contact page? I’m sure that some prospective clients have visited his website, in hopes of commissioning his service. Through a mixture of luck, skill, and opportunity, Mr. Gardner has become well-known in the industry and to clients alike. Unfortunately, this also means he’s pretty busy right now, and simply can’t take on new projects.

But it’s not a total loss. Brian Gardner was kind enough to recommend two fellow designers: Josh Bowers and Sheree Parish. So how is this valuable for a freelancer?

It’s reasonable to assume that thanks to Brian’s recommendation, Josh and Sheree are probably attracting more inquiries for their services. As a well-known design personality, Brian has the reputation and authority to influence the decisions of other people. In this case, Mr. Gardner’s recommendation should be strong enough to drive traffic to the subject of his professional admiration.

This entire setup makes the power of recommendations obvious, whatever form (like reviews, testimonials, or in Brian’s case, links) they may take. We just need to remember that for a recommendation to be really valuable from a freelancer, it has to seem unbiased (i.e., someone’s recommending you because they seem to genuinely like what you do).

The trick is to be creative in acquiring recommendations. Did a client recently praise your work? Has a popular website linked to your blog? So long as you accomplish your projects on time and to spec, in a creative manner, the recommendations will come. it’s just a matter of using them effectively, with maximum effect.
