What’s Your Distraction Threshold?
How easily are you distracted?
Right now I’m trying to write this post in a noisy cafe (a local Starbucks clone). While I’m finding it easy to write out these sentences, I’ve noticed that even a little noise tends to throw me off the productive track (today seems to be an exception apparently).
On the other hand, I’ve noticed that other people are capable of working in noisy environments, and even when someone else is talking to them in person or through IMs. I don’t possess such ability, because I’m worried that if I divide my attention between my current project and some external distraction, I’ll end up producing poor quality work.
Since I try to be aware of what kind of situations prove threatening to my productivity, I do a better job of avoiding them. Or, if I know I’ll be spending some time in such an environment, I try to finish my work beforehand.
Asking yourself how easily you are distracted—or being aware of your distraction threshold—can help your productivity. It’s like an athlete who goes to the gym to address certain weaknesses; the first step to acquiring what you need to improve your productivity is knowing what you need in the first place.
In this case, taking the time to think about how much distraction you can put up with will provide a better picture of what kind of work environment you require to maximize your productivity.
So again I ask: how easily are you distracted?
