Contract Worker - Freelancing Experiences

When Not to Joke Around

by Rico on February 27th, 2008

There’s no problem with fun and games. But being funny can have its consequences for a freelancer’s career and reputation. Snopes does a great job of busting urban myths, especially those that have found life on the Internet. It even explains why some of these “myths” are actually true.

Such is the case of the Risque Coca-Cola Poster, where an artist sneaked in some sexual imagery as a joke:

Because of his actions, he ended up getting sued. Which is a reasonable reaction when a company’s name is affected. Imagine what being on the wrong side of a suit with merit would do to anyone’s freelance career! Not to mention the personal hardship it will cause for said freelancer.

In short, joking around is a way to make our lives more interesting. But when it’s business, it’s business.
